THE KINGDOM OF WAVES

Sébastien Léon’s paintings are an extension of his practice as a sculptor and sound artist. The departure point for each painting is a three dimensional sculptural rendering projected onto a wood panel. The lines of the sculptural rendering serve as a geometric guide that he uses to apply strips of tape to guard off negative space before the painting process begins. He meticulously builds up an abstracted pseudo-landscape through layers of acrylic painting, all the while preserving the minimal scaffold of his three-dimensional rendering.

The Kingdom of Waves paintings are ultimately transmuted into three-dimensional topographies, where every color temperature becomes an altitude. These chromatic landscapes are then rendered as looping fly-throughs, transforming the paintings into hypnotic outer-space journeys across their acrylic terrain.
